Controlling Gun Control
The Bill of Rights is the un-debated rights of every American citizen. Since the writing of this document none of the amendments have had such hatred and discrimination as the 2nd amendment. Yet the ownership of a firearm is one of the rights bestowed by the founding fathersof the United States of America. Ronnie Lankford Jr., the author of “Gun Violence” explains that the founding fathers supported the right to own a firearm (Lankford, 20-21). This is a way for the Americans to defend and protect themselves against tyranny. If the writers of the Bill of Rights felt that guns were dangerous or evil; firearm ownership would have never have found its way into this historic document. The author of “Gun Control Debate” explains that the majority of gun bans target assault rifles yet; firearm related crimes using assault rifles are extremely low to begin with (Gun Control). Politician’s main intensions are to eliminate all guns from law abiding citizens and not just clean the streets of crime. Linda Saad author of “Self-Reported Gun Ownership in U.S. Is Highest Since 1993” says, “Forty-seven percent of American adults currently report that they have a gun in their home or elsewhere on their property” (Saad). Nearly half of all Americans have some sort of gun yet the government wants to remove the right which so many Americans embrace. Many others are neutral in the debate or even support firearms, yet do not own one. All Americans should be able to purchase, own, and carry a firearm. 2nd amendment rights, self defense, and crime reduction are three ideas that support the right for all people to be armed. The 2nd Amendment of the Bill of Rights gives all citizens the right to bear arms. Our countries founding fathers thought strongly enough that gun ownership was important enough to ensuring our freedom that they put it down as an American right. With such a large number of Americans embracing this many would think that modern politicians would leave gun owners alone when it comes to which guns and attachments people can and can not own. Even with the strong opposition modern governors, senators, and even presidents are still at war with 2nd amendment supporters. Ronnie Lankford Jr. author of “Gun Violence” quotes Thomas Jefferson when he says, “Laws that forbid the carry of arms… disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes… such laws only make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather then prevent homicide for unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man” (Lankford, 20-21). 200 years ago gun bans were felt as un-constitutional and were frowned upon. Yet today they are encouraged by many government officials. These bans takes away the freedom so many died fighting for. The author of “Gun Control Debate” supports this when he says, “congress realized that this 10 year ban on semi automatic firearms was bad policy and bad politics” (Gun Control). The government had finally recognized the error of their ways when they tampered with American’s guns with the Clinton Gun ban. Many believe that guns are dangerous but, that is only if their in the wrong hands. Millions of people find great joy from firing them. Also, some rely on guns for food when hunting. Students can actually receive a scholarship from shooting in competitions. It has been written in black and white that Americans can have guns and should always stay that way. Though owning a firearm is constitutional they are proven to be beneficial during life threatening situations. If someone is being robbed or even attacked by a murderer calling the police during the crime would be near impossible, and if it is even done; help will probably come too late. Attackers aren’t going to wait for cops to arrive so they can be taken to jail. Police may think their first responders but, the truth is their...
