The 2nd Amendment needs to be protected
A woman pushing her stroller home with her daughter inside is suddenly approached by a deranged individual brandishing a knife, demanding all the money in her purse. She reaches into her purse; instead of taking out her wallet she produces a large caliber handgun. The man seeing the gun recoils and runs. The woman did not have to fire the gun for it to intimidate her attacker, although she would have. She had been trained and qualified to carry a concealed handgun. Guns are a great way to defend ourselves from those individuals mentally incapable to function in modern day society, or a government trying to oppress its citizens. A gun ban will create more problems than it will solve.

Guns are mainly used for three reasons, hunting, self-defense, and war. Research shows that on average there are over 800,000 instances where a gun is used defensively every year. (Kelck) When interviewed, 34% of felons said that they had been “Scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim. 40% of these criminals admitted that they had been deterred from committing a crime out of fear that the potential victim was armed. (humanevents.com), (justfacts.com). While guns are often associated with the attacker, the victim may very well have a protective firearm on their person. Everyday 550 rapes, 1,100 murders, and 5,200 other violent crimes are prevented just by showing a gun. In less than 0.9% of these instances was the gun, ever actually fired. (gunfacts.info). This goes to show just how intimidating firearms can be.

A lot of Americans will say “Guns should be banned to reduce the number of deaths in this country.” Research has proved this to be untrue. For instance, during the years in which the D.C. handgun ban and trigger lock law was in effect, the murder rate averaged 73% higher than in the years before.
