This paper seeks to discuss International communication in the social media, it gives a brief overview of what communication is, what social media means. A brief history on the emergence of the social media, its characteristics and how it is in use in this 21st century. My purpose of writing this paper is to bring into lime light the undeniable effect of the social media positively and negatively, and to also point out the effect it has on international communication news flow in the world today. This paper affirms the fact that the flow in international communication suffers from imbalance from the developed nations down to the undeveloped nations. Examination from different scholars on the issue is also put into consideration and this paper has my personal view on the situation and a conclusion. Keywords: social media or social networking, international communication, influence, imbalance.

Global communication is considered as increasingly important both as a real world phenomenon and field of research as there has been a steady strengthening of the conditions of globalization. Not too long ago ,we all communicated through mail, hand held telephones, and in person, but today we now send test messages, leave voice messages, use instant messenger, send emails, talk through head phones, cell phones, online video phones and the internet where a profusion of social media tools has redefined communication. Social media is about conversations, community, connecting with the audience and building relationships. The flow of information in this era is however mind disturbing, the young children are exposed to so many raw realities of the world at the wrong time of age, it is therefore disturbing that the children are filled with information’s that should be kept for the latter, a wise media scholar once said and I rephrase that the new media technologies has in many ways traveled the kids round the globe when they haven’t even crossed over to the next street across their homes. Information is now being received by people all over the world as long as you have the access to it, the positive impact of this is not far fetched but so is the negative, in my own understanding I think the positive aspect has surpassed the negative aspect, the world is changing. So many things are being discovered and developed due to this new global communication world; communication is now carried out more effectively with ease. The issue of imbalance in the flow of communication between nations is one base point in this paper Let’s take a look at what communication is all about….

Communication is derived from the Latin word “communicare” which means to make common or share (Pearson, Nelson, Titsworth Harter, 2003) Pearson et al defined communication as a process by which meaning is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs or behaviors. Communication is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behavior. It is the meaningful exchange of information between two and a group of living creatures. WIKIPEDIA DEFINITION Communication is one of the main essences of living, no one is an island, and we all have to interact with one another, get information, and share information. The exchange can take place on a face to face level without the help of any mechanical device it can also take place on a mass basis; example radio, television, magazine, newspaper, telephone, telegram to mention a few. Due to the emergence of the new social media, the use of mechanical device has grown on a fast rising scale. Albert Einstein once said and I quote

“I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have generation of...
