Specific Purpose: to persuade my audience that bullying in schools is not okay and should be stopped Introduction
I. Does anyone know what it means when a child becomes withdrawn, shows fear when its time to go to school and has declined in school performance? II. What if I told you it is symptoms of a child being bullied? Could you ever imagine such a thing being acceptable and prominent in this day and age? III. I think we can all admit to being bullied once upon a time or even witnessed or done the bullying ourselves. Whatever the case may be I hope I can get you to agree that bullying needs to be stopped. IV. To simply understand why you should agree that bullying needs to be stopped immediately I will discuss the issue of bullying, why children bully, and lastly the effects bullying has on children. Body

I. You must understand that bullying is not just a small issue, it’s an issue that is worldwide. A. Bullying is a problem that affects millions of students of all races and classes. 1. 1 out of 4 kids are bullied and depending on their ages up to 43% of students have been bullied while online according to the non-profit organization STOMP out Bullying. 2. Child and teen bullying and cyberbullying are at an all time high. Some students are so tormented by it that they result to suicide. It has everyone worried and not just the victims but also parents, teachers and others who might not understand how extreme bullying can get. 3. This video clip just shows how extreme bullying can be and how it’s a major issue for children. It can really raise awareness about this issue. B. Some feel that bullying is a normal right of passage in growing up and that they will soon overcome it and move on. 1. I’m here to tell you that its not! There will always be issues and conflicts between children but bullying its intentional cruelty, harassment, and emotional and physical and sometimes sexual abuse. 2. Transition: Now that we have looked at the issue of bullying we can discuss why children bully. II. Why children bully is a question that needs to be answered and known before successfully stopping bullying. A. A common reason that a child is a bully is because he/she lacks attention from home and lashes out at others for attention. 1. This can include neglected children, children of divorced parents, or children with parents under the regular influence of drugs or alcohol. Children also learn to bully from the behavior of their parents. It is a learned behavior, which can be unlearned. 2. James Lehman states that some kids bully because “it solves their social problems. After all its easier to bully somebody than to work things out, manage your emotions, and learn to solve problems.” B. Some say that some children are just more aggressive, dominating and impulsive by nature and it doesn’t mean they are necessary bullies. 1. But that is simply not a bully! A bully dominates, blames and uses others. They lack empathy and foresight and have contempt for the weak. They see weaker children as their target and don’t accept the consequences of their actions. They crave that power and attention. 2. No matter what kind of bully someone is, they have not learned kindness, compassion and respect. 3. Whether we have been a bully ourselves or have known someone who has, it is very important to understand that bullying is serious and can have harmful effects on our youth. Transition: In addition to discussing why a child is a bully, there is also another point to look at and that is the effects bullying has on a child. III. Knowing the effects bullying has on children is an excellent way to really understand that bullying needs to end. A. One very huge factor in the effects of bullying on a child is their...
