THE IMPACT OF BULLYNG AND CYBERBULLYING
ON THE WELL-BEING OF STUDENTS
LORENZO LANDRUM
TROY UNIVERSITY

Introduction
Statement of the Problem
Bullying has always been a problem amongst students in academic and social settings. However, the government, school administration, parents, and the media have begun to examine this issue more closely due to the increase in reported incidents and new factors i.e., social networks. According to stopbullying.gov, which is managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, bullying is defined as “unwanted aggressive behavior among school age children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance” (What is Bullying, 2012). Significance of the Problem

The significance of cyber-bullying has increased over the past couple of years. With the constant increase of technology, it has made it easy for students to taunt and humiliate others. According to stopbullying.gov, which is managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, cyber-bullying is defined as “bullying that takes place using electronic technology, which includes devices such as cell phones, computers and tablets, as well as social media sites, text messages, chat and websites” (What is Bullying, 2012). Research Question

Is there a relationship between bullying and the well-being of students? Hypothesis
There is a relationship between bullying, as measured by the Personal Experience Checklist (PECK), and well-being, as measured by the Ryff Scale in students.

Literature Review
Cyber-bullying: Peer Victimization
Direct or traditional bullying has become a way of the past. The new generation of “bullies” are now mobile and do not have to have direct contact with their victims. Bullying that was once mostly based on physical altercations have now progressed to vicious rumors sent via text message or embarrassing pictures posted on social networking sites. Not only have the methods changed, but the tools of choice now include cell phones and tablets. Bullying: Emotional Impact

Psychosocial problems such as “depression, social anxiety, and low levels of self-esteem” (Rosario Ortega, 2012) have been linked to have an emotional impact on bullying. It also has a lasting effect on the person. “Many people who are bullied are so hurt by the cruel treatment that they contemplate suicide and some actually attempt and succeed in taking their own lives. There is often no end to bullying for victims. Devastating effects of bullying is the pattern it creates in victims’ minds and personalities that can last their whole life” (The Psychology Of Bullying, 2013). Literature Review Conclusion

To summarize the findings of the study conducted, both bullying and cyber-bullying experiences, “independently of whether they are face-to-face, indirect or through different technological devices, have a damaging impact on majority of the victims” (Rosario Ortega, 2012).

Methodology
Participants
The study will require a minimum of 250 students from both middle and high school (6th-9th grade) collected from at least five different school within the area. Their ages would range from 11-16 years. One requirement for the participants is that they are willing to be truthful and forthcoming in giving their responses. Reasons for choosing this age group is because they are more vulnerable or susceptible to fall culprit of others older than they are. Sampling Procedure

Data will be collected from students who have either witnessed or have been a victim of bullying and divided into two categories from all schools. From the two lists, 250 students will be randomly selected to be participants in the study. They will be contacted through the school, by administration. The information given to the students by their teachers will explain the reason for the study, and the procedure of the study.
