Chapter 11: In Hong Kong and Macao, 1888
February 1887, Rizal was force to leave his country for the second time, at that time he was already a full grown man. He was already 27 years old a practicing physician and a recognized man-of-letters.
On February 3, 1888 Rizal left manila for Hong Kong on board the Zafiro. They made a stopover at Amoy but Rizal didn’t get off his ship because of three reason first he was not feeling well, second it was raining hard and third was he heard that the city was dirty. He arrived in Hong Kong on February 8.
During his stay in Hong Kong, Rizal wrote a letter to Blumentritt, dated February 16, 1888, expressing his bitterness.
In Hong Kong Rizal stayed at Victoria hotel. He was welcomed by the Filipino residents, including Jose Maria Basa, Balbino Mauricio, and Manuel Yriarte.
A Spaniard, Jose Sainz de Varanda, a former secretary of governor general Terrero, shadowed Rizal’s movement in Hong Kong. He was commissioned by the Spanish authority to spy on Rizal.
Rizal wrote to Blumentritt saying about Hong Kong being a small and clean city. That there Filipino’s staying there but they are poor, gentle, and timid.
February 18, Rizal went to Macao. Rizal described Macao as a small, low and gloomy city. There are many junks, sampans, but few steamers. It looks sad and is almost dead. He stayed at Don Francisco Lecaros.
During his 2 days stay in Macao, Rizal visited theaters, casino, cathedral and churches, pagodas, botanical garden, and bazaars. He also saw the famous grotto of camoens.in February 9, he witness a catholic procession. On February 20, Rizal returned to Hong Kong. Rizal’s experience in Hong Kong during his two-week visit, he studied Chinese life, language, drama, and customs. And he wrote down to his diary his experiences.
In February 22, Rizal left Hong Kong his destination was japan.
